WATER DAMAGE CATEGORIZED

Water Damage Category 1 (Clean Water) -
Clean water that is visibly clear and possesses little or no odor. If you smell any type of fecal matter or urine, your water is either category 2 or 3. Common sources of category 1 water is water supply lines such as dishwasher lines, refrigerator / ice maker pipes, sink water lines, and hot water lines used for hot water home heating. Broken appliances such as a dishwasher or hot water heater also fall under the category of clean water.

Water Damage Category 2 (Grey Water) -
Grey water is also visibly clear for the most part. However, it often has a slight to mild foul odor that is noticeable when in the affected area. This water damage must be treated with much more caution than the clean water mentioned above. Sources of category 2 grey water commonly include a failed sump pump or overflowed toilet.

Water Damage Category 3 (Black Water) -
Black water is the most dangerous of all water damage. It is a filled with bacteria and is a breeding ground for harmful contaminants, including bacteria and mold producing organisms. All materials affected by black water damage must be handled with extreme caution, removed from the residence, and discarded of immediately. Black water commonly comes from failed ejector pumps, broken sewage lines, water from streams, rivers or seas, and any standing water. Any water with visible fecal matter is most definitely black water. Once again, all materials affected with black water must be carefully but promptly discarded.

Let the Select team help you reduce the recovery costs following a water loss with our advanced structural drying system. We are able to dry more and tear out less!

Our 24 Hour Disaster Recovery teams helps by:

  • -minimizing business interruption
  • -preserving unaffected areas
  • -reducing mold and mildew damage
  • -salvaging documents, books, and files
  • -saving hardwood floors, Carpet and Pad, Drywall and ceiling tiles
  • -preserving electronic equipment, computers, and operating systems

We can dry the structure, the contents and save you thousands in reconstruction costs. Select Restoration can help by drying drywall, insulation, hardwood floors, wood and metal studs, concrete block, plaster walls, ceiling tiles, and much more. Select Restoration will also control the environment to inhibit mold growth, as well as condition the environment so damage to computers, operating systems, and building utilities can be minimized.

For a successful drying project and reduction of any probable microbial growth, a homeowner must be aware of the four significant principles of drying, which Select Restoration will do in the following order:

    1. Excess Water Removal

This pertains to draining, pumping, absorbing and vacuuming methods applied to remove the presence of visible water.  It is said that the excess water removal principle is the most abused principle since some contractors are not willing to invest in proper equipment and time to extract surplus moisture sufficiently.  In general, water removal could be done in minutes or seconds as compared to evaporation and dehumidification of the same water quantity that actually takes hours and days to finish.  Proper water removal or extraction could cut down the Category 1, Class 2 drying activities by a number of days.

    2. Evaporation

The second structural drying principle is evaporation, which entails changing the physical aspect of water from liquid to vapor.  The fast movement of air from any professional drying tools or equipment heightens the rate of moisture evaporation into the air.  Thus, minimizing the moisture or dampness on the surfaces, which aids in microbial propagation.  This likewise incorporates evaporative cooling of structures and components to further prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.

    3. Dehumidification

Upon evaporation of moisture from the structural materials, the specific humidity (SH), relative humidity (RH), and vapor pressure of air increases.  Vapor pressure coerces the evaporation of moisture within cavities, structural materials and contents that results in having considerable secondary damage that increases the cost and scope of water damage.  The dehumidification process speeds up drying by lowering vapor pressure and raising moisture out of materials into the air.

    4. Temperature Control

The last but not the least principle of drying is the proper control of temperature within a given environment.  For this influences the efficiency of evaporation, dehumidification and the ability of microorganisms to thrive.
